Things to Know

School Policies

Click on the any of the items listed here to learn more about how our school operates. If you have any questions about items not mentioned here, please contact us and we’ll be happy to give you additional information.

Attendance
Regular attendance and on time arrival contribute greatly to a child’s adjustment and happiness at school. Parents should escort their child to his/her classroom at 8:30 a.m. Parents can pick up their child at the back kitchen doors at 12:00 p.m.
Pick Up
Please do not enter the school after 11:55 while we prepare for dismissal. If you pull through the lot behind the church, do not block Jefferson Street. If you would like to take time to talk with your teacher or friends at pick up, please park in the lot next door.
Emergency Pick Up
Your child will only be released to those listed in his/her file. If your child is to go home with another child or picked up by someone not listed, written permission from a parent is mandatory. Forms will be provided by the preschool.
Late Pick Up
It is imperative that the students be picked up by 12:00. There will be a $10.00 charge per 10 minutes for any child picked up after 12:10.
Inclement Weather
Shenandoah Preschool will be closed when the Lexington City Schools are closed. If Lexington City is 2 hours late, SPS will begin at 10:30. If Lexington City is 1 hour late, we will start preschool at 9:30. Please feel free to call your child’s teacher at home after 8:00am if you are in doubt.
Field Trips
All children must have the blanket permission slip form signed and on file in order to participate in any outing, though notes will be sent out detailing particular trips and their activities. Parents will be asked to provide transportation on trips not within walking distance from the church.
Discipline
Positive methods of dealing with negative behaviors are employed. Discipline will be handled in a firm but loving manner. Redirection to appropriate behaviors will be used. Parents will be contacted if behavior is habitually inappropriate or if your child’s behavior is harmful to others. No physical means of discipline will be used at any time.
Communication
We feel close communication is an essential part of a successful school year. A calendar of activities will be distributed by your child’s teacher at the beginning of each month. Please periodically check the school-wide calendar posted in the hallway for new information. Please check your child’s backpack folder for daily notes, upcoming events or changes in the regular schedule.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
In order to insure confidentiality, we will be unable to discuss your child’s progress or behavior during drop-off or pick-up. Please contact your teacher if you need a conference at any time during the school year.
Potty Training
Shenandoah Preschool cannot accept children in the 3- and 4-year old classes who are not potty trained. Two-year-old children should be dressed in clothing conducive to successful potty training.
Health
The Physician’s Health Form must be returned to the school by the first day of school in order for your child to attend. Please do not send a sick child to school. If a child becomes sick at school a parent will be contacted and asked to pick up the child.
When to keep your child home from school:
  1. Oral/rectal temperature above 100 degrees.
  2. Vomiting or diarrhea within 24 hours.
  3. Impetigo (must be completely clear before returning).
  4. Cough with fever.
  5. Pink Eye (conjunctivitis).  All discharge must be gone.
  6. Runny nose (thick and greenish indicating infection).

Parents are urged to keep children at home until all signs of illness are gone.  The preschool will not be able to dispense any medications unless your child has a physician’s prescription.  All medications will be dispensed by the director.

Tried-and-True Guidelines

Guests: Due to the lack of insurance coverage on non-registered children, your child will not be allowed to bring guests to school.

Toys: Please do not allow your child to bring toys from home. We provide many toys and other educational items to be used during school.

Snacks: Snacks will not be provided by the preschool. You will need to send a snack and drink with your child. Children will not be allowed to share snacks. Do not send the following foods: candy, cookies, cakes, brownies, etc. If a child has a food allergy, all parents in the class will be notified about its severity and implications.

Birthdays: You may bring a special snack for your child’s birthday and it will be served at regular snack time. Please do not send birthday invitations to school unless each child in the class will receive one.

Show and Tell: Show and Tell will be incorporated into the preschool curriculum. Teachers will notify parents of weekly themes in the calendar.

Dress: Please dress your child in clothing suitable for preschool activities. We recommend that the children wear tennis shoes as we visit the playground daily. An additional change of clothes in your child’s backpack is recommended, just in case. When the weather is cool, please remember to send a jacket with your child.
